Pakistan Introduces IP Whitelisting and VPN Registration Portal to Enhance Business Continuity

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has unveiled a streamlined one-window portal dedicated to IP whitelisting and VPN registration, aiming to ensure seamless business operations across the country.

Since 2020, more than 20,000 IPs have successfully been registered through the PTA and Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) platforms. This initiative is part of a broader effort to bolster cybersecurity and facilitate secure digital communications for businesses.

However, the move has sparked debate. Senior journalist Hamid Mir has raised concerns about the potential downsides of implementing a firewall and the possibility of internet shutdowns. He warned that these measures could adversely affect internet speeds and the overall digital economy, which is crucial for Pakistan’s growth in the global tech market.

This portal represents a significant step forward in securing Pakistan’s digital landscape, but the concerns raised highlight the need for a balanced approach that safeguards both security and the country’s digital economy.
