Position Overview: The General Farm Hand position at Massey University’s Riverside Farm in Masterton, Wellington, plays a vital role in supporting the Farm Manager with general farming operations and stock work. This includes assisting in optimizing farm performance according to Massey Agricultural & Horticultural Enterprises (MAHE) policy.

Department: Massey Ag & Hort Enterprises (MAHE), College of Sciences

Reporting to: Manager, Riverside Farm

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in planning and distributing feed allocation.
  • Manage weeds and pests to maintain pasture and crops.
  • Monitor stock health and nutrition, informing the Farm Manager of any concerns.
  • Handle livestock when necessary.
  • Maintain daily diaries and paddock records as per MAHE standards.
  • Liaise with rural professionals for smooth farm operation.
  • Ensure Riverside products meet quality, quantity, and timeliness standards.
  • Manage repairs and maintenance of farm machinery and infrastructure.
  • Adhere to environmental consent conditions and best practices.
  • Work collaboratively within a team, following instructions and adhering to safety policies.
  • Maintain workplace quality standards and actively participate in health and safety activities.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of practical experience as a General Farm Hand.
  • Proficiency in machinery management, especially tractors and farm equipment.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Willingness to attend training courses for skill development.
  • Understanding of and interest in farm work.
  • Valid New Zealand driver’s license.
  • Familiarity with University systems and processes, including TechOne, FlexiPurchase, Orbit, and Workflow Max.
